Why you should finish those odd jobs before you put your home up for sale.

Posted on Tuesday, November 21, 2023

Odd Jobs. Most of us have them around the house. Sometimes it is the things we never quite got finished. Sometimes it minor things that need repairing. It could be something we would change if we were not planning on moving. We convince ourselves our buyer can do that. Or change that. I’ve heard house owners tell me buyers change things anyway, so what is the point?

The point is clear. You are right. Buyers will change things. However, they want to do it through desire in a time frame that suits them. Not through need. If they are doing it through need, it will most likely affect what they will offer you. Not finishing your minor odd jobs could cost you thousands!

The Kitchen

Take a look around your kitchen. If your kitchen is older make sure your doors are hung properly. A broken drawer front could make a buyer think you need a new kitchen. Replacing handles, work surfaces and taps is really cost-effective and can give your kitchen a very effective facelift.

The Bathroom

Just like kitchens, bathrooms are key areas for buyers. Make sure your tiling, grouting and sealant are sparkling. Update an older suite with new taps. Change your shower screen or curtain. Often a new floor covering or simply swapping an old radiator for a chrome towel rail can make an older bathroom look much more modern.

The Garden

Now that Summer is here, buyers will spend much more time looking outdoors. Make sure your fence is in good order. Are the panels the same colour? Does the gate open easily? Is your lawn kept neat and borders weed-free? Show your outside space as a place a buyer can relax outdoors!

The Bits We Often Overlook

There are lots of areas we often overlook. Cloudy double glazing can put a buyer off totally, even if it's just a couple of units. Light sockets that are covered in paint look unsightly. Light bulbs that don’t work make people wonder what else doesn’t. Make sure your front door opens easily. You don’t want your buyers struggling to even get in!

Most of these jobs are what we call DIY. Maybe a family member or friend can help you. However, if you need help with any of them, let us know. We know some great handymen, decorators and gardeners who are all cost-effective too. Treat these jobs as an investment in your home. After all, you are doing them to help you move and get the best price for your property!
