Cycling really took off in the 19th Century and today, it is believed that over 50% of the world's population know how to ride a bike. There have been many studies carried out which state a number of health benefits in cycling which include,,,
Social wellbeing - Great opportunity to enjoy and share time socialising with friends and family! Improves wellbeing which releases endorphins and other good substances such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.
Good for the Heart - Cycling on a regular basis is proven to stimulate your heart, lungs and muscles reducing the potential risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Exercise can strengthen your immune system - Studies have found that exercise has great benefits on the upper respiratory system which in turn helps combat the common cold. It is highly recommended that you eat and sleep well shortly after though, as this will ensure immune system levels don't drop significantly when you stop.
Eco Friendly - Bikes don't run on fuel and if more people cycled, there would be fewer cars on the road which in turn results in a better, less polluted environment for all to enjoy.
Cost-Effective - No road tax, parking permits/charges, mot or fuel required - resulting in being very cost-effective for you!
We are fortunate to have superb routes in our area, most notably The Millennium Pathway which is set along the River Lune and is approximately 15 km long. This popular pathway covers Halton and Caton Green to the East before joining St George's Quay for the Lune Estuary and Glasson Dock in the South. Lancaster was awarded a Cycling Demonstration Town status in 2005 for its various cycle parking facilities available in the city. It was developed along the old Green Ayre railway line which ceased operating public train services in the 1960s. This route is mostly flat and a great ride on a summers day.
As well as the Millennium Pathway, we also have the fabulous Bay Cycle Way a relatively flat route that runs through Cumbria starting on Walney Island and covers approx. 130km to Morecambe. You can access this path from Lancaster, Heysham and is proven a useful route used by commuters reluctant to endure the daily rush-hour road traffic!
