Many daily sailings take place at The Port from companies such as Seatruck, Stena Line and the Isle of Man Steampacket.
Whilst most of the journeys are associated with freight crossing the Irish Sea, The Steampacket connects the Isle of Man to Heysham, with daily sailings for both foot passengers and vehicles on the ferries and fast craft services. The Isle of Man Steampacket Company will enjoy its 190th anniversary this year! This makes it the oldest continuously operating passenger shipping company in the world!
Heysham Port connects across the water with Dublin, Warrenpoint, Douglas, Belfast and Greenland.
Heysham Power Station
Heysham Power Station based near the port, is split into 2 sites. Heysham is the only Power Station in the UK to have 2 operating Nuclear Power Stations.
Heysham 1 employs approx 530 full time EDF Energy employees and over 200 full time contract partners.
Heysham 2 employs approx 520 full time EDF Energy employees and over 250 full time contract partners.
The Power Stations are operated by EDF energy. If you’ve ever wondered what EDF stands for it’s Électricité de France! EDF Energy supplies approximately 5.7 million homes and businesses throughout the UK.
If you want to know more you can arrange a pre booked tour via the Power Station Visitor Centre. These tours last approximately 2 hours.
The Bay Gateway
The Heysham to M6 link road which is called The Bay Gateway was opened in October 2016. The Bay Gateway has dramatically improved access to and from the Morecambe and Heysham areas. Property prices in these areas have seen the benefits too. The road has opened up all sorts of potential for the Port of Heysham, hopefully seeing growth in industry and employment for the area over forthcoming years. The location of Heysham Port now with it's improved access makes it an ideal distribution hub to serve Ireland, the Isle of Man and our mainland.
The excellent transport links also support a thriving local business community. You'll find many businesses connected with transport, logistics and off shore supplies on the nearby industrial estate.
Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay isn't part of the Port however it's very close by. This area offers stunning coastal walks which drop down into Heysham Village taking in areas such as The Barrows, Heysham Head, St Patrick's Chapel and St Peter's Church. There's also a great cafe right on the beach offering hot drinks and tasty food.
Heysham Nature Reserve
You may not expect to stumble across a nature reserve a stones through from a nuclear power station, however this green space is home to many birds and butterflies, just round the corner from Heysham docks! It's a 3 hectare site with on site car parking run by The Wildlife Trusts.
So from Ferries to Flora and Fauna, Heysham Port offers it all!
