To begin with, this is a true village school which has close links to St Wilfrid’s Church. It is set in generous grounds and has views over the surrounding countryside. It’s away from any main road and this does make a difference to the quality of air and a persons well-being, let alone a child's!
The school itself is medium-sized. There are 249 pupils however as the village expands due to the number of new homes being built, it is thought that the school admission numbers will increase.
The school has 8 classes including reception. Class sizes are kept to a maximum 35 and under 30 in the under 7’s. The classes are named after trees, just like many of the streets in Halton with Beech, Oak and Pine all appearing. Just like when I was at school, each child is also placed into a house - Red, Yellow, Blue and Green. It encourages friendly competition as each child looks to score team points for its house in recognition of effort and achievement.
The curriculum is available on the school's website and offers interesting and diverse subjects beyond the basics of Maths, English and Sciences. There are computing, art and design, foreign languages and music. Life skills and value learning also appears on the timetable (key stage 2 )
St Wilfrids School is proud of its sports and exercise and rightly so. Not many schools can boast a 100% success rate when it’s come to its pupils learning to swim.
This is a school where the children get the opportunity to practice football with Morecambe Football Club and coach in Rugby with Kirkby Lonsdale RUFC. There are weekly cross country runs and a challenge to run a marathon ( just not in one go thankfully!! ). The school also has its own athletics league!
The football and rugby above do fall in the extra circular activities. The school also hosts messy play in conjunction with St Wilfrid's Church. In addition to this, there are lots of other extra activities in out of school hours ranging from Gardening, Cooking, Computer coding and outdoor adventure.
Schooling is important. Other than unconditional love, a great education is one of the best things you can give your child. St Wilfrid’s Primary School is one of the area’s best. Families who we have spoken to over the years always rate the school highly.
