Living in Lancaster - a focus on Fairfield

Posted on Saturday, August 29, 2020

This week on our area guide focus,  we thought we would look closer as to what it is like to live in Fairfield and why this part of our city is in such high demand.  Fairfield is an area of the city which features many period homes ranging from 2-bed terraces through to larger 5 and 6-bed houses.   It is popular with academics,  families and many people who are more “green” aware.   The area is surrounded by greenery, features some fabulous allotments and is home to Lancaster’s Fauna and Nature Reserve.
Living in Lancaster - a focus on Fairfield

Many of the residents that live here, when they move,  choose to stop in this area, simply moving to a larger home as their family grows.   Over the years we have seen this happen repeatedly.  When we asked a client why,  they answered very simply  - “It is the sense of community that Fairfield offers, combined with the best of countryside living and the city life, both on your doorstep”.

Here are 5 things that the residents have told us, they love the most

No.1  Fauna and the nature reserve

The Fairfield Association Flora and Fauna Nature Reserve is a 16 acre protected reserve on the edge of the city.  It is found at the end of Wingate Saul Road and wraps itself around the LA1 5 postcode.    There are some beautiful walks.  Wildlife and rare birds are regularly spotted.   There are some beautiful walks which are both as educational as they are relaxing.

No.2  The community spirit

Fairfield is renowned for its community spirit.  It is home to families with children of varying ages, professionals who work in the city and several postgraduate students.   Neighbours know each other.  People chat.   Lots of events take place during the year from easter egg hunts,  trick and treating, Christmas carol singing and a popular fun day down on the green.

No.3  Walk into the city

Live in Fairfield and you’ll never take your care into the city centre.  Live here and you are just a 5-10 minute walk.   The city centre has lots of independent cafes, bars and restaurants and is also home to market day every Wednesday and Saturday.  You can also be at Lancaster Castle in under 10 minutes

No.4 Great for commuters

Many people who need to commute to work choose Fairfield as a preferred place to live.  Lancaster train station is just a 5-minute walk.   This mainline station connects people directly with Preston, Manchester, Birmingham and London.   If you head north,  you have direct links to Glasglow and Edingburgh.

No.5 Family-friendly and great schools

Fairfield is a family-friendly destination.  Many homes are located on roads with little passing traffic.  Residents permit parking is place.   Down on Fairfield Green, there is a superb well-maintained play area and playing fields for ball games to be enjoyed.

Education opportunities are also superb.  Fairfield is in the catchment area of two “good” primary schools and in walking distance of both the Boys and Girls Grammar Schools.
